This presentation will provide an overview of the psychotherapeutic phenomena of impasse. Focus will be placed on the contributing factors to the development of impasse, signs in both the patient and therapist that signal an emergent impasse, systems issues related to impasse, and techniques for engaging impasse in the therapeutic dyad.

Daniel Knauss, PsyD, ABPP, is the Director of Training, a staff psychologist, and Grand Rounds Chair at the Austen Riggs Center. He is board certified in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy as well as psychoanalysis. Dr. Knauss has worked clinically in a variety of settings including private practice, community mental health, university counseling centers, medical centers, and residential treatment settings. He serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education, Inc., and the American Board and Academy of Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Psychology.
