Tuesday Seminar - Therapeutic Action - Melinda Gellman, Ph.D.

How do we understand the mechanisms of change in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis?    In this seminar we will explore different concepts of therapeutic action, and how they have evolved along with changing views of our therapeutic project and models of mind. We will review readings and use case material to discuss how thinking about therapeutic action informs and grounds our interventions and treatment goals.

Learning Objectives

Participants will identify what we mean when analysts talk about therapeutic action, and will begin to understand the historical evolution of different concepts of therapeutic action from singular to multiple and pluralistic.

Participants will be able to explain the importance of non-verbal, procedural realms of experience, and discuss the importance of early infant-caregiver environment, dynamic systems theory and enactment. 

Participants will be able to explain important contributions of the interpersonal tradition to the development of two-person, interactive, relational concepts of therapeutic action.

Participants will be able to discuss the contemporary shift, reflecting Bion’s contribution, towards understanding therapeutic action as facilitating the development of mental capacities for metabolizing raw experience.

Participants will discuss and question ways that holding and synthesizing multiple models of therapeutic action can enhance competence in clinical work and professional identity.

Melinda Gellman, Ph.D. is on faculty at New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, where she currently teaches and serves on the Executive Committee.  She has organized panels and presented on topics of clinical interest at conferences of the IPA, APsaA and Division 39.
