ForwardTuesday Seminar - The Psychoanalytic Frame with Heather Forouhar Graff, MD and Edward R. Shapiro, MD
The “frame” in psychoanalysis refers to Freud’s discovery of a set of constants within which “a conversation (can take place) between two people equally awake, but one of whom is spared every muscular exertion and every distracting sensory impression which might divert his attention from his own mental activity". Set up by the therapist (scheduled hours, vacations, fees, office structure), the patient can experience the therapist’s frame (and the therapeutic relationship) as representing aspects of their difficulties (from the security of the mother’s body, to the oppressive, withholding and abandoning other). For the therapist, the frame represents their commitment to the therapeutic task and their membership in a community of therapists. In this bounded space, patients can reexperience painful experiences and begin to understand them symbolically as metaphors, usable to help them to acknowledge, bear, and put in perspective painful past experience.

Heather Forouhar Graff , MD - Assistant Team Leader/Staff Psychiatrist. Dr. Forouhar is a staff psychiatrist, therapist and assistant team leader at the Austen Riggs Center. She consults to process groups that are aimed at studying relationships to authority. Dr. Forouhar began her education as a painter at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a special interest in perceptual phenomena such as pattern recognition and the interaction and relativity of color. As an undergraduate, she was a research fellow at The University of Chicago studying the neural correlates of learning and memory in songbirds as a model for language development. She has presented on the nocebo effect in treatment resistance, the value of process groups in the experiential learning of group dynamics in psychiatric residents and on the narcissistic vulnerabilities of trainees and the associated obstacles to learning within the supervisory relationship.
Edward R. Shapiro - Distinguished Faculty in the Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy. A board-certified psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, family researcher, and organizational consultant, Edward R. Shapiro, MD, is a distinguished faculty member in the Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy of the Austen Riggs Center. He is the former Medical Director/CEO of the Center (1991-2011).
