Trauma’s Haunting Legacy: Is Repair Possible? - Jill Salberg, PhD (Webinar live online)

This presentation is my attempt to address brokenness and reparability within psychoanalytic theory and clinical work, and the impact of serious trauma and its transmission on succeeding generations. The concept of transgenerational transmission of trauma suggests that the original injuries are of a magnitude and kind of human betrayal that lives on not only in the original victim but in generations to come who have not directly experienced it. These transmissions reveal an essential aspect of what is irreparable and the struggle we have in psychoanalysis in response. I will be querying our theories, and the role of repair and cure has played and whether newer ways of understanding traumatic impact suggest different goals. A clinical case will be discussed reflecting traumatic transgenerational transmissions and ways to understand, witness and work with the impact on the second generation. Considering our unremitting succession of wars and as we ignore the legacies of colonialism, hatreds of others (racism, sexism, homophobia, and virulent anti-trans) and the climate emergency, I believe we need to consider what are the limitations in our theories of mind? What can therapeutic action realistically accomplish, and can we repair violated trust, all betrayals, and traumas that our patients have endured? Or does repair need to be reconceived?

- Participants will be able to formulate psychoanalytic ideas of repair and cure vs. transformation and growth as outcomes of psychoanalytically informed treatment.
- Participants will be able to identify aspects of transgenerational transmissions in the fragmentary ways in which they appear in treatment sessions.
- Participants will learn how to work with trauma transmissions that arise in treatment.

Jill Salberg, PhD, is faculty/clinical consultant at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies, and a member of IPTAR and the IPA. She is on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Quarterly, associate editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and a reviewer for The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. She is editor of and contributor to the books: Good Enough Endings: Breaks, Interruptions and Terminations from Contemporary Relational Perspectives (2010) and Psychoanalytic Credos: Personal and Professional Journeys of Psychoanalysts (2022). She has co-edited, with Sue Grand, The Wounds of History: Repair and Resilience in the Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma, and Transgenerational Trauma and the Other: Dialogues Across History and Difference, (2017); both books won the Gradiva Award (2018). Their co-written book is Transgenerational Trauma: A Contemporary Introduction (2024).
