Roundtable #4 - Loneliness and Belonging in Emerging Adulthood - Moderated by Spencer Biel, PsyD (Recorded)
Emerging adults are reporting surging rates of loneliness and isolation, leaving many developmentally adrift and vulnerable to accumulating mental health troubles. This panel considers how social turmoil, mistrust, pessimism, and polarization uniquely challenge young adults’ identity development, agency, and sense of belonging. Additionally, the panel explores forms of engagement that encourage their social participation and harness their essential contributions to the world they are joining and helping.

- Spencer Biel, PsyD, is the director of the Remote Access Intensive Outpatient Program for emerging adults in Massachusetts.
Panelists:
- Michael Roth, PhD became the 16th president of Wesleyan University in 2007. He has overseen the launch of academic programs at Wesleyan such as the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life and the Shapiro Center for Writing, as well as five new interdisciplinary colleges emphasizing research and cohort building in the areas of the environment, film, East Asian studies, integrative sciences, and design and engineering. Under his leadership, Wesleyan had its most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history, raising more than $482 million, primarily for financial aid. Roth has undertaken a number of initiatives that have made a Wesleyan education more affordable for many and more accessible to students from under-represented groups.
Jillian M. Stile, PhD is a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapy. She is Instructor of Clinical Psychology in the Psychiatry Department of Columbia University Medical Center. She serves as Senior Advisor and is on the faculty of the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma, Global Mental Health. She teaches PGY-3 residents at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, and has taught at the School of Human Studies at Ambedkar University of Delhi, and at William James College in Boston. Dr. Stile completed her doctoral training at the New School for Social Research following a Master’s degree at Boston University School of Medicine. Her predoctoral psychology internship at Fordham University Counseling and Psychological Services led to a postdoctoral fellowship at Sarah Lawrence College Health Services, where she honed her skills in treating young adults. She earned a Certificate in Adult Psychoanalysis at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, where she gained considerable experience in working with emerging adults in psychoanalysis. In 2024, Dr. Stile founded Sanite International, an NGO whose purpose is to promote healing environments for women and children in Haiti and beyond through the work of community psychoanalysis. She is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association. She has authored articles on the topics of psychoanalysis, culture, and identity and presents internationally. She maintains a private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and New York City.
