IOP Seminar - Essentials of Psychodynamic Technique - Instructor Seth Pitman, PhD, ABPP

October 20, 2025 to November 24, 2025

The goal of this course is to examine the core techniques of psychodynamic psychotherapy and how they contribute to therapeutic change. We begin by situating psychodynamic technique within the broader landscape of psychotherapy, considering the role of both common factors and specific interventions in the therapeutic process. From there, we return to Freud’s early writings on establishing the treatment frame, then trace the development of technique through Strachey’s emphasis on emotionally transformative interventions, contemporary approaches to clinical practice, and the empirical evidence base for dynamic methods. The seminar concludes by integrating these perspectives, highlighting how psychodynamic technique both stands apart from and converges with other modalities
