IOP Seminar: Beginning a Treatment - Instructor Dan Knauss, PsyD ABPP

June 3, 2025 to July 8, 2025

This seminar will focus on the initiation of a treatment from a psychodynamic perspective. A particular focus will be placed on the notion of the frame and its establishment, the role of a psychodynamic therapist as related to their theoretical lens, and boundaries that contain a therapeutic process. Participants will explore these concepts through readings, discussion, and clinical examples, emphasizing their application in therapeutic settings.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to identify three key elements of the frame and their relevance to the beginning of a treatment.

Participants will be able to discuss the manner in which they orient a patient to treatment at the outset of therapy.

Participants will be able to describe deviations in the frame and what they might indicate about treatment.

Participants will be able to assess boundary violations relevant to a psychodynamic treatment.

Participants will be able to explain the differences between classical and contemporary approaches to maintaining the frame in treatment.

Dan Knauss, PsyD, ABPP, is the director of training, a staff psychologist, and vice-chair of the Institutional Review Board at the Austen Riggs Center.

He holds interests in infant mental health, epistemic trust in systems of care, and mentalization informed approaches to treatment. Dr. Knauss is board certified in psychoanalysis and is active in organizations promoting psychoanalytic thinking and approaches to treatment. He serves on the boards of the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education, Inc., the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychology, and as a Member at Large on the board for The Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology, Division 39, of the American Psychological Association.

In addition, he serves on the Editorial Board for Psychoanalytic Psychology and formerly served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He is passionate about psychoanalytic education and supervision.
