IOP Seminar 2026 - On Listening, Instructor: Christina Biedermann, PsyD, ABAP
This three-class seminar will explore what might be learned about the mechanics of listening to patients from critical reading.
Using the work of psychologist Carol Gilligan, PhD as a frame and author George Saunders as a guide, we will consider what reading text critically (here, a Russian short story) might help us articulate about how we listen. We will then apply what we’ve learned to part of a clinical interview conducted by Otto Kernberg, MD. Finally, we’ll reconsider it all in light of a more traditionally psychoanalytic text on listening by Bruce Reis, PhD.
Ideally, participation in the seminar will deepen our understandings of how we listen to patients, particularly what Gilligan describes as their “under voice[s],” including but—more importantly beyond—what psychoanalytic theories might direct our attention to.
Course Expectations: Although I’ll begin each class with a brief overview of why I chose each reading and offer a few preliminary thoughts, this seminar will primarily be discussion-based, so please come to seminar having viewed the video, read the reading, etc…
