Empowering Vulnerable and Underserved Global Communities: Designing and Implementing International Volunteer Training Programs with Cathleen Morey, PhD, LICSW and Breeanna Bellinger, LMSW

May 24, 2024

This course is designed to provide mental health practitioners with the essential skills needed to develop and implement impactful international volunteer training programs, targeting the empowerment of vulnerable and underserved global communities. The presenters will illustrate these concepts through a case example, detailing a series of trauma trainings conducted in both rural and urban locations in Ghana. These trainings, which were based on a Train-the-Trainers model, were delivered to various service providers – educators, NGO professionals, and domestic violence detectives from the local police force – who work with young women who have been subjected to ritual servitude, forced labor, and sex trafficking. Additionally, the presenters will discuss two trauma-informed psychoeducational workshops focused on coping skills and self-care that were delivered to young women from this population.

The process of conducting a comprehensive community needs assessment, in advance of traveling in-country, to strategically develop a culturally responsive training curriculum that met the unique needs of the target population will be outlined. In addition, the presenters will highlight strategies for effective implementation and evaluation of in-country interventions.

Using this case example, the presenters will emphasize the centrality of mental health practitioners embracing a stance of cultural humility, when engaging in cross-cultural and cross-racial
