IOP Seminar - Systems Psychodynamics - Instructor, Spencer Biel, PsyD

Individuals shape and are shaped by their social systems. Systems Psychodynamics is a framework for studying this interplay and the influence of unconscious forces on how individuals, groups, and organizations take up work. In this seminar we’ll discuss the comingling of intrapsychic and social pressures and conflicts, examining how individuals get mobilized on behalf of others, sometimes in unnegotiated and limiting ways. After identifying core principles of this framework, we’ll apply it to treatment settings, including our IOP, focusing on how it can promote learning and development.

Learning Objectives

Define systems psychodynamics as a theoretical framework.

Describe projective identification in large group process and ways it can contribute to mindlessness and retreat from responsibility.

Discuss “treatment resistance” as a sign of hope in terms of preserving the chance for autonomy and refusing to silence painful but important forms of social disturbance.

Provide examples of organizations using social defenses to manage disturbing affects.

Apply a systems psychodynamics framework to IOP treatment teams
