On January 12, 2023, we celebrated CURED, winner of the 2022 Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media, with a live virtual screening of excerpts from the acclaimed documentary, which highlights a pivotal but little-known moment in history when activists, psychiatrists, and their allies rose up to challenge the American Psychiatric Association’s classification of homosexuality as a mental illness—and won!
A panel discussion followed the screening featuring the film’s co-producers and directors, Patrick Sammon and Bennett Singer, and activist and film interviewee Rev. Magora Kennedy, in conversation with Austen Riggs Center Medical Director/CEO Dr. Eric Plakun and Director of the Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy Dr. Jane Tillman.
While we cannot share the excerpts from the documentary, the recording does capture the introductions and discussion.
