The development of the Alternative Model for DSM-5 Personality Disorders will be described, reviewing the hybrid nature of the model that incorporates two dimensional components: 1) level of impairment in functioning, and 2) pathological personality trait domains and trait facets. Graduate school is a time when students are beginning to form their professional identities and beliefs about both what treatments are effective and which theoretical orientations best match their professional identity. As a result, this can be the best possible opportunity to combat biases against psychoanalytic approaches in the next generation of clinicians. This presentation will discuss challenges to teaching psychoanalytic theory to graduate students today and potential techniques for overcoming these challenges.

Aging is associated with a spectrum of cognitive changes ranging from normative mild alterations to clinically significant changes to debilitating impairments. Behavioral symptoms, too, are common and these can resemble non-cognitive mental health disorders. In this presentation, Dr. Ellison will review these cognitive syndromes, discuss assessment, and review decision-making and management issues relevant to the care of persons living with mild cognitive impairment and early dementia. Continuing education information coming soon.
