The adoption and mental health fields have viewed adoption as being only about children. Adopted adolescents are a more recent afterthought, with adults nowhere on the radar. From their psychodynamic perspectives on the psychology of being adopted, the presenters maintain that therapists often do not recognize the critical differences between adopted and non-adopted patients, or the need for important modifications in treatment. This requires specialized advanced training.

This presentation will focus on South Korean television series known as “K-drama,” a genre that tells stories in 16-20 one-hour episodes. The stories focus on individuals in crisis, who resolve their issues in several steps that lead to a deeper engagement with their friends and family. This “team” then is able to tackle larger problems of the society. This optimistic drama form offers insight, drawn from the syncretic philosophical and religious traditions of Korea, into the recovery of individuals and groups, from an array of traumas and social upheavals.

Severely disturbed patients often show bodily symptoms relating to unrepresented states. These states result from traumatic breakdown of the patient’s ability to symbolize but also from a traumatic disorganization of the patient’s body-self. The psychoanalytic technique of interpreting the chain of free associations is in danger to overlook these encapsulated body engrams. Somatic narration describes a focused attention on the patient’s proprioception.

The author cites the prominence of theories which locate serious adult psychopathology in the pre-verbal infant’s inability to formulate or represent traumatic experience. The work of two such authors, H. Levine and D.B. Stern, is briefly considered. The frame of reference for this investigation is that clinical and academic research findings are highly relevant to psychoanalytic theorizing. It is argued that when such findings are considered, a view of the infant with “primitive,” “unformulated,” or “unrepresented” states of mind has little evidence to support it.

Problem Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a modified psychoanalytic treatment approach that addresses patient’s specific problems, including  symptoms, personality issues, relationship struggles, and behavioral difficulties. The primary facets of this treatment approach are described, including identification of problems and their associated triggers and feelings, and developing a psychodynamic formulation to aid therapists in addressing specific areas of difficulty. Modifications of psychodynamic techniques to target problems, including use of the transference, are described.
